The care office in your region arranges care for people with a Wlz assessment (Long-Term Care Act). It does not matter which health insurer you are with. Anyone who lives or works in the Netherlands can contact the care office in their own region.

How do I apply for a Wlz assessment?

You apply for a Wlz assessment via the Care Assessment Centre (CIZ). The CIZ assesses whether you are eligible based on objective criteria. To reach a decision, the CIZ gathers information, for example about your health and home situation. There will also always be a face-to-face interview with you.

During the application process, you can seek support, for example from your partner or family. You can also use the services of an independent client support worker. The care office in your region will be happy to provide you with more information on this.

What happens next once I have received a Wlz care assessment?

You can receive Wlz care at home or in a care facility. With your Wlz care assessment, you are entitled to a comprehensive care package. Depending on your situation, this package includes various forms of care, such as personal care, nursing care and domestic help. The care office pays for Wlz care directly to the care provider if you use care that has been procured by the care office. It is also possible to arrange Wlz care yourself using a personal budget (pgb). You may, however, be required to pay a personal contribution for Wlz care.

We recommend that you first contact the care office in your region before deciding how you wish to arrange your Wlz care. Your care office will be happy to tell you about the different ways in which you can arrange care and the providers offering this care in your region. This will enable you to make an informed choice. How do I arrange my care if I don’t have a Wlz assessment?

Do you need long-term care but are not eligible for a Wlz assessment? If you need home care, you can arrange this through your health insurer. This might include administering medication and help with showering. You can find more information about this on your health insurer’s website. If you need another form of support, such as counselling, day care, youth support or sheltered housing, you can contact your local council.

How do I know if a Wlz care provider delivers good care?

Would you like more information about the quality of Wlz care provided by care providers in your region? Care providers publish an annual quality report on their website. In this report, you can read about the quality of their care. You can find out which care providers are in your region on your care office’s website. On the government website www.kiesbeter.nl, you can also find information about the quality of care providers. You can easily search by care provider.

What can I do if I have a complaint about my Wlz care?

Are you dissatisfied with the care provided by your Wlz care provider? And have you been unable to resolve the issue together? The Wlz has a complaints procedure. Every care institution has a complaints officer. You can discuss your complaint with the complaints officer. The officer will help you find a solution. Your care office can also support you with complaints, disputes, objections and appeals. If you wish, you can also contact a (free) independent client support worker. The care office can inform you about the options available.

What support is available for family members and carers?

People covered by the Long-Term Care Act (Wlz) require a great deal of care. This can have a significant impact on family members and carers. As an informal carer, you may, for example, be worried about the care. Or you may regularly step in as an informal carer but find it difficult to keep this up. Would you like some respite as an informal carer? Under the Wlz, it is possible, under certain conditions, to arrange a temporary stay for the client. The care office can advise you on this. If the insured person does not have a Wlz assessment, but you are still concerned as an informal carer, please feel free to contact our Care Guide; they will be happy to help you! Can I receive Wlz care abroad?

In certain situations, you can receive Wlz care abroad if you are there temporarily, for example because you live in a Wlz care home in the Netherlands and are going on holiday abroad. Or because you unexpectedly need emergency Wlz care abroad. The reimbursement depends on the country in which you are staying. Always consult your care office in advance.

If you arrange your own Wlz care using a personal care budget (pgb), you may arrange care abroad for a maximum of 13 weeks per calendar year. Is the budget holder receiving palliative end-of-life care? In that case, care may be arranged abroad for a maximum of one year. Ask your care office about the options.

Do I need supplementary insurance in addition to my Wlz assessment?

Are you staying in a Wlz care home that also provides your treatment? For some parts of Wlz treatment, cover is included in supplementary insurance policies. Whether taking out supplementary insurance is worthwhile is a matter for you to decide. The Wlz care home can help you with this by providing information about the care they offer or can offer. The Wlz institution can also inform you about the care you can expect. Example: Sometimes physiotherapy is an integral part of the treatment provided by your Wlz residential institution and you are entitled to reimbursement under the Wlz. In other cases, reimbursement from supplementary insurance is appropriate.

If you are not staying in a Wlz institution that also provides your treatment, for example because your Wlz institution cannot provide treatment or because you are not staying in a Wlz institution, then you are not entitled to reimbursement for additional care under the Wlz and supplementary insurance may be advisable. Your health insurer can provide you with information on this.
