First-line inpatient stay
A first-line ('eerstelijns') inpatient stay is a short-term stay in a care facility when you are temporarily not able to take care of yourself in your own home.
Reimbursement of a first-line inpatient stay
First-line inpatient stays are aimed at recovery and return to the home situation in the short term or relate to palliative terminal care.
The care does not include:
- inpatient stays after a medical intervention
- inpatient stays related to respite care
- psychiatric inpatient care if you are younger than 18
- inpatient stays for insured with a care assessment under the long-term care act (Wlz).
You will need a referral from a General Practitioner or a medical specialist for a first-line inpatient stay.
When are you entitled to an inpatient stay?
You are entitled to reimbursement of first-line inpatient stay when a short-term stay is required on medical grounds. This is to include round-the-clock availability and provision of nursing and/or care, whether or not in conjunction with paramedical care connected to the grounds for the stay.

By virtue of the public health insurance, you are entitled to reimbursement of a inpatient stay.

Maximum rates for a non-contracted care provider

If the rate invoiced by the non-contracted care provider is higher than our maximum rates, you will have to pay the difference yourself.
